The portrait bust was raised by admirers and friends of the writer Johannes Buchholtz (1882 – 1940) one day in June 1942.

Anker Hoffman – who was a dear friend of the writer – has moulded and invented the sculpture in Buchholtz’s own basement. You can see the old house to the left, behind the bust.

The bust was made in bronze and put on a footing of granite after Buchholtz’s death. The face has been put on a granite footing, which is formed like an open book.

Originally, the sculpture was placed between the museum and the house. When the museum re-opened in 2008, it was placed in the windbreak so that the founder of the house, (Buchholtz himself), could greet visitors upon arrival.

On the footing one of the writer’s own poems, ’Nightly Visions’, from the poetry collection ’Ravens and Pigeons’ is written:

LIVET DER ER EN POGESKOLE (Life is a School)
OG DØDEN DEN SIDSTE PRØVE (And Death is the Last Test)
LÆRTE MAN IKKE KÆRLIGHED (If You Did Not Learn to Love)
SÅ VAR DET HELE FORGÆVES (It Was All in Vain)
